Published!
Yeah, that's right. It was a surprise to me, too.
Back in the Fall, my friend Jude (my artist) and I were nearing the deadline on our 2-page "romance" story. We went a little bit past the deadline, but that was okay.
Then, the head honcho had apparently overbooked the volume. I talked it out with Jude and we agreed to voluntarily cut ourselves from the book and be guaranteed a spot in the next appropriate volume. I say "appropriate" because each one so far has had a theme. Our romance 2-pager wouldn't really fit in the horror volume. Well, maybe it would, depending on your point of view.
So, we figured we had about a year to rework it (as per the head honcho's posted schedule of upcoming books), maybe get another page or two to play with, redo the art, etc. We hadn't really talked heavily about it. Hell, the only time we talked about redoing it was in the same conversation where we agreed to cut ourselves.
A few weeks ago Jude messaged me on Skype asking if I knew our story had been printed anyway. News to me! Jude had his own solo story, another 2-pager, also printed. He had actually volunteered that to be cut as well. His parents bought the books to support the "brand" and he was flipping through it and saw not just his solo story, but the one we worked on together.
I never heard any notice beforehand from anyone on high, nor have I received a comp copy yet. I'll get on the head honcho about that soon, but in the meantime I'll check it out at Jude's house next time I'm over.
I'm excited to be published, but at the same time I really did want to rework it and let it "breathe" a little better.
As for the story itself, I'm happy with how it turned out. I based it all on what I was going through with my ex and the dialogue is at least 95% accurate to real things that were said. Therapy through writing! It's an emo and depressing story, though. Not a very happy ending.

Like I said, I haven't seen it. The earlier "Gathering" volumes had bios for the creators and I certainly wasn't contacted in regards to this, so I worry there's some half-assed info. Regardless, I dedicate my work in the volume to my mom. I wish she could read it.
